Dandruff occurs when dead skin cells shed from the scalp. It is normal for dead skin cells to die and flake off in small amounts, however, some people experience more than usual flaking of the scalp which can also cause irritation.
Causes of dandruff may be dry scalp, irritated oily skin (seborrheic dermatitis), not shampooing often enough, skin conditions, a yeast like fungus (malassezia) or sensitivity to hair products.
Dandruff can almost always be controlled by shampooing with a gentle shampoo to reduce oiliness and skin cell buildup. If that fails dandruff shampoos can always do the trick, but they are not all made equal. Be sure to speak to one of our hair stylists about what product is best suited to control your dandruff.
